The Hainanese Village Centre (Lorong Ah Soo Market) is not to be belittled!!! Lots of hidden gem… And talking about Hainanese, I think as I get older, there is no denying of my roots as a Teochew. I used to deny being a Teochew for some reason… Anyway, little known the Teochew root was inborn.

This is a very simple traditional teochew braise stall aka “lor”. Old school simple taste done well. For those who appreciate the old school style of kueh chap where u can simply drink up the “lor” cos its not thick but soupy. This is it. Though soupy but definitely flavourful.

The stall is very simple and old school too – red/yellow signboard with a simple setup. The price is definitely cheaper than most! $2.80 for a set for 1! Where to find??? But you have to be early cos they sell out fast. I was there on a Sunday morning at 1030am and almost all the good stuff are sold out – 卤肉, 粉肠, 猪皮… But nonetheless still eat!

We had our set (well, not exactly a set cos most stuff are sold out but still good for 2) for only $6!!!! We had tau pok, tau gua, big intestines, fishcakes, egg, salted veg. The man asked: “Where are all your favourites?” Me: 😒🙄😖

The kueh is nice, thin and smooth, just the way i like it. The lor is light and soupy. I am not a tau gua fan but this tau gua is soft, wet and supple! Nice! The prep of the intestines is good – no foul smell and taste and nicely braised. The chilli – I will prefer a spicier version but its tangy and quite savoury. I love the bamboo scoop for the chilli! Definitely a cheap and good eat.
