My office has just shifted from upper Geylang to lower Geylang and I read rave reviews about Lao Wang Kampong Bean Sprout Chicken Rice so brought the whole “kampong” there for lunch.
This chicken rice stall is started by an ex 5* hotel chef but honestly, I think we will all agree not all chefs cook great food. But this is really kampong chicken done well at a good price too! I saw their individual set that has a portion of chicken, bean sprouts, rice and soup for $6. Thats a pretty good deal but cos there is 4 of us so we orderd ½ a chicken $13, a plate of chicken feet, gizzards and liver and of course, the bean sprouts $6. Needless to say, chicken and bean sprouts are the signature.

The kampong chicken has very thin tight skin, very nice and slick and I almost wonder if they just sell the skin. Hahaha. The chicken was cooked to perfection. I love that extra drizzle of shallot oil, elevates the taste!!! The bean sprouts are nicely done, not over, fresh and crunchy. But then it says on the menu “silver fish” bean sprouts… I was like where are the silver fish?! Oh there it is… A few deep fried pieces which I almost mistook as shallots. Lol… Chicken definitely worth it. Bean sprouts a tad expensive but will still order.

Now… The surprise is the chicken liver and gizzards!!! Most of the time, these are by and by, not much attention paid to cooking them but I love innards so… I am particular about it. They are cooked to perfection! I am very particular about liver being cooked to the point, soft and tender. Anything abit over, I won’t even waste my already over calories count on them! I think this whole plate of innards cost about $6 and i just realised the rest of my kampong don’t eat innards so.. lucky me! The chicken feet was ok.

Then I know I had to dabao for the man cos my mil wasn’t cooking that day so I dabao-ed 1 x 鸡未 and add on a chicken wing but thats $8+! 😱😱😱 That is expensive! Should have just dabao the individual set. Or just chop a ½ chicken… So if you are eating there, remember to not order parts like that – dive straight for the set of ½ or full chicken.

Rice was done well, not overcooked or under. Every grain was done well. Fragrant and flavourful. I love the chilli too – spicy and yummy. The ginger scallion dip was so-so, could be more flavourful. Soup was not too bad either. I will definitely be back!!! Oh, by dinner the stall do sell BBQ seafood too – will try that later.

My lunch order for 4 pax:
½ chicken $13
1 big bean sprout $6
Crystal chicken feet $6
Gizzard and liver $6
4 Rice $3.20
